One of our favorite segments each week on the Trail 103.3 is Vinally Friday – a day when your favorite on-air personalities bring a piece of their personal vinyl collection into the Trail studio for a few spins and stories.
The significance is manifold: Not only do we get to feature some lesser-known tracks (and look cool in the process) – but we get to present music LIVE on the air in its original format. True, we’ll often throw a modern record into the mix. But more often than not, we’re spinning the original cut, mono format, hisses, pops, needle scrapes and everything.
You might be wondering who actually still listens to vinyl? Turns out it’s more than just a fringe movement. Vinyl sales have been on the rise for the past 14 years, and 2020 has been no different, with sales at a 42% increase over 2019. While many prefer streaming services and downloads for convenience in 2020, music experts say there is still a demand for vinyl.
And we’re not just talking about new material. In fact, 9 of the top 20 highest-selling vinyl records in the U.S. were by dead artists and defunct bands (Queen, Beatles, Nirvana, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, etc.)
Nor are we talking about a resurgence in music purchases from our senior generations. According to Fortune Magazine, one in four young adults ages 18 to 24 purchased a vinyl record in the last year – many of them purchasing a new record each and every month.
We’d like to say we started it; we really would. But the truth is, we’re not trend-setters. We just give our listeners what you want. So enjoy!
Finally, it’s Friday! It’s Vinally Friday, only on the Trail 103.3.
