Featured Trail – 6/3

Welcome to the Trail Well Traveled!

Each Friday, in partnership with Montana Wilderness Association and Bob Ward’s we will feature a new western Montana trail and then give one lucky listener some cool goodies to help them embark on their journey!

Today we highlight a trail known for its vast views and beautiful spring wildflowers:

Continental Divide Trail – Alice Creek to Lewis and Clark Pass

Located within the Helena National Forest, this hike is steeped in history and perfect for those of us just getting back into hiking mode.

Roundtrip: 10 miles

Directions: Head east on Highway 200 through Lincoln, and about 10 miles past town turn left onto Forest Service Road 496, about three miles past the turnoff for Aspen Grove campground.

What will you find? Interpretive signs at the trailhead share the area’s long history – we’re talking pre-Lewis and Clark! From the trailhead the shaded path climbs gradually, passing through only a few hundred feet of forest before opening into expansive alpine meadows. The trail remains relatively wide and continues to incline gradually. Wildflowers bloom in late April and May, beginning with purple pasque flowers and magenta creeping phlox.

Want more? Turn west towards the Scapegoat Wilderness, offering sweeping views of the rugged landscape.
